The Goldilocks Spectrum
The 12 GHz spectrum bands have often been referred to, by myself and others, as the “goldilocks” bands of spectrum. This is because the 12 GHz bands have so many different characteristics that make them “just right” to be unleashed for American providers and consumers.
In terms of propagation characteristics, the 12 GHz bands are in a sweet spot, high enough spectrum to cover a wide area with a stable connection, but low enough to be able to penetrate buildings and other network blockers. In addition to these propagation characteristics, the 12 GHz bands also already possess a large technical record, no federal encumbrances, and do not require an FCC spectrum auction.
The 12 GHz bands truly are unique in their slate of benefits for increased utilization, no other bands offer such an array of ease, efficiency, and practicality. By utilizing the goldilocks bands more fully, the FCC could create up to a trillion dollars in total societal value and propel the US back into a global spectrum leadership position.
While other bands may be comparable to 12 GHz in one or two aspects, the 12 GHz bands represent a comprehensive offering that makes sense on multiple levels. Our legislators and policymakers need to recognize this generational win-win opportunity and direct the FCC to unleash the goldilocks spectrum for American providers and consumers today.
